It is difficult to find a good selection of Cahors wines in the UK despite the fact that the quality of a £10-£12 Cahors should be similar to that of a £20+ Bordeaux. Despite the rules stipulating at least 70% of any Cahors must be Malbec, there are so many different styles of wine produced throughout the region from juicy, easy-drinking, everyday wines to big, tannic, hearty reds.

A small number of merchants do offer a good selection; one of the best is available through The Big Red Wine Company which has, over the last couple of years, consolidated its position as one of the UK's leading specialists in wines from South-West France, including three estates in Cahors.

Our cycle tours include Château du Cedre, by any standards one of the great estates in Cahors, making wines better than many of Bordeaux' leading châteaux but in a distinctive style, particular to this region. The estate is overseen by Pascal Verhaeghe, one of the region's most innovative winemakers. Pascal also advises at nearby Château Haut-Monplaisir where the 100% Malbec wines take time to mature but are well worth it for anyone who enjoys the more traditional style. At the far end of the valley, past the magnificent Château de Bonaguil, lies Soturac, home of Château Lamartine, another highly regarded estate which uses some Merlot and Tannat in all but its flagship wine.
